Faces

I have many faces
Excited and can't wait to explore
Content to just sit and be
Fearful the darkness will return
Depressed, the darkness transcends
Numb, unable to feel anything.

That is the worst
Unable to feel joy, pain
Darkness, light
Contented
Nothing matters
I don't matter.

Lost in the darkness
Wandering, wondering
Hoping, wishing
Waiting for the sun to
Break through
The clouds.

A crack,
A small sliver of light
Breaks through the darkness
Offering hope
Warmth
A chance to matter again.

  2. I really like the format of the dark background with the picture. It adds a visual component to this poem that matches theme. There is such powerful language here. This stanza is strong, and its conclusion heartbreaking:

    "That is the worst
    Unable to feel joy, pain
    Darkness, light
    Contented
    Nothing matters

The dark imagery and the crack through which there is a light, and warmth and hope are a good vehicle to use to work up to the line "A chance to matter again." Even though the narrator of this poem does undoubtedly matter, that he or she doesn't believe so is what is driving this poem. For me I'm glad to see the turn at the end again toward hope, something to which we can all relate. This is wonderful. Thank you.
